A sensational first-half hat-trick from Ollie Watkins helped Aston Villa to a stunning 7-2 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League to end the champions' unbeaten start to the season.
Liverpool started badly at Villa Park, as a poor pass from Adrian - deputising for Alisson in goal for the visitors, after the Brazilian picked up a shoulder injury - gifted Watkins the opener in the fourth minute.
If there was an element of good fortunate about Watkins' first goal in a Villa shirt, his second was all his own fine work, as he cut inside, before firing into the top corner to stun the champions and make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute.
Mohamed Salah's fine left-foot finish seemed to get Liverpool back in the game in the 33rd minute, but John McGinn's deflected strike two minutes later restored Villa's two-goal advantage.
Watkins completed his hat-trick inside 39 minutes, with former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley-- making his debut, after joining Villa on loan - making it five, 10 minutes into the second half.
Salah did give Liverpool hope on the hour mark, before a late double from Grealish completed a remarkable victory for the team that just avoided relegation last season.
The defeat came hours after Manchester United suffered a club record-equalling defeat in the Premier League era, as they crashed to a 6-1 loss at home to Tottenham Hotspur
Son Heung-min and Harry Kane each scored twice for Spurs, while United's Anthony Martial was sent off in the 28th minute, as Jose Mourinho celebrated a stunning victory on his return to the club that sacked him 22 months ago.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side had taken a second-minute lead through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, but Spurs responded quickly, taking advantage of some awful United defending, as Tanguy Ndombele and Son put them 2-0 ahead.
United went down to 10 men, after Martial clashed with Erik Lamela at a corner and was sent off, and then Harry Kane made it 3-1.
Son added his second shortly before the break, as United conceded four goals in the first half of a league game for the first time since 1957 - also to Spurs.
Serge Aurier made it 5-1 in the 51st minute, before Kane completed the rout from the penalty spot.
United also lost 6-1 to Manchester City in October, 2011.
Solskjaer says the defeat is his worst day at the club.
"It's a horrible feeling, the worst day I've had as a Manchester United manager and player," he says.
"I've been part of big defeats before and we've bounced back, so we've just got to let the boys go away on international duty, find their mojo themselves, and the others that are going to stay here, we've got to help them.
"After a result like this, you need to clear your mind and head, and look forward."
