Blackcaps batsman Tom Blundell has entered the record books for the wrong reasons after he was given out obstructing the field on the final day of Wellington's Plunket Shield match against Otago at the Basin Reserve.
During the second over of the final day, Blundell, who was on 101, played a ball from Otago bowler Jacob Duffy.
He initially tried to kick the ball, which is legal, before palming it with his hand which is against the rules.
Blundell quickly realised his mistake and was soon given out for obstructing the field.
Until 2017, Blundell would have been out handled the ball but a change in the laws brought that mode of dismissal under obstructing the field.
At the time, Wellington was chasing 94 runs for victory with three wickets in hand, but the loss of Blundell saw them quickly bowled out, as Otago claimed an 84-run victory.
Blundell is just the second New Zealand first-class batsman to be dismissed obstructing the field. The last was Canterbury's John Hayes more than 60 years ago in the 1954-55 season.
Wellington remains winless in the Plunket Shield, while Canterbury sits top ahead of Auckland.
Blundell is set to open the batting for the Blackcaps when they host the West Indies in their test series next month.
