Former NZ Māori All Black James Lowe has switched international rugby loyalties, after he was named to an extended Ireland squad to contest the Autumn Nations Cup.
The former Chiefs cult hero is one of three uncapped players - all among the backs - selected by coach Andy Farrell to face Wales, England and Georgia in the northern hemisphere tournament, created to replace traditional end-of-year tours by southern nations during the coronavirus pandemic.
Lowe's addition means the Irish squad now contains three NZ-born players, with centre Bundee Aki and halfback Jamison Gibson-Park also among the 34 named.
The wing/fullback was born in Nelson and represented Tasman, before 53 games over four seasons with the Chiefs in Super Rugby.
Lowe, 28, made four appearances for the NZ Māori, including their 2017 loss to the British & Irish Lions, before taking up a contract with the Irish Leinster club in Pro 14 competition.
He quickly re-affirmed his fan favourite status, scoring 10 tries and helping his team to victory in both the Pro 14 and Heineken Cup in his debut season.
Lowe has since amassed almost 50 games and 33 tries for Leinster and now qualifies for Irish selection through residency. His debut may come against Wales next Friday (November 13).
