Kane Williamson has notched his third test match double-century as the Blackcaps piled on the runs on day two of the first test in Hamilton.
The New Zealand skipper passed 100 for the 22nd time in tests, and registered his highest score, eventually dismissed for 251 in a mammoth score of 519/7 dec.
The West Indies batted with patience and grit in a tough two hour session to end the day 49/0 with Kraigg Brathwaite (20) and John Campbell (22) sharing an unbeaten opening stand.
Earlier, Ross Taylor fell early, adding just five runs to his overnight score, before he was caught behind off Shannon Gabriel for 38.
Henry Nicholls came and went quickly, caught superbly at slip by captain Jason Holder off Kemar Roach, heaping more pressure on the Cantabrian to maintain his place in the side with Devon Conway waiting in the wings.
Tom Blundell struggled to get going, grinding his way to 14 from 63 balls in a 91-minute stay, before he was trapped in front by Gabriel leaving the Blackcaps 353/5 just after lunch.
Williamson was joined by Daryl Mitchell and the pair added 56 with the captain raising his bat in the process for an outstanding double ton.
Mitchell fell shortly after for a 37-ball nine, bringing Kyle Jamieson to the wicket.
The towing right-hander punished a tired West Indies attack, smashing five fours and two sixes on his way to a first test match half century (51no).
Williamson went to his 250 in style, hoisting Alzarri Joseph over square-leg for six, before falling a ball later trying to repeat the shot.
Williamson took a few minutes in the sheds to freshen up and New Zealand declared at 519, leaving a daunting task for the visitors.
But the opening pair were more than up to it, blunting the Blackcaps attack, and aside from a few nervy moments thanks to an impressive spell from Jamieson, the West Indies were unscathed at the close of play.
