Cricket: Injury outlook improves for Blackcaps' Lockie Ferguson

There's positive news on the injury front for one of the Blackcaps paceman Lockie Ferguson.

Newshub understands the prognosis on Lockie Ferguson's back injury is better than first feared and a diagnosis of an incomplete stress fracture has boosted hopes he could return for matches against Australia in February.

Meantime, as the team prepares to begin their series against Pakistan, uncertainty remains over exactly when the skipper will return to action.

On Tuesday, the Blackcaps arrived in Auckland without Williamson , who didn't play in the second test win over the West Indies, as he awaited the birth of his first child.

"There's no update on baby news at this stage, so we've just got to let them carry on as is," says coach Gary Stead.

Williamson will definitely miss Friday's opening Twenty20 against Pakistan, with the coach hoping for a return when the series heads to Hamilton and Napier.
