Russian Formula One driver Nikita Mazepin has escaped major punishment for an Instagram video that showed him touching a woman's breast.
The Haas F1 team has reaffirmed the 21-year-old will take his seat on the grid for the 2021 season alongside fellow rookie Mick Schumacher, following an internal investigation.
Several notable names within the F1 community have slammed Haas for not dumping Mazepin, who is the son of Russian billionaire Dmitry, who is funding his drive with the team.
"I've never been so disappointed in the sport I truly love," wrote prominent motorsport journalist Mark Gallagher. "What a f***ing disgrace."
"I doubt anyone pretends the person concerned is central to a plan to become competitive, rather his backers provide the financing needed to help sustain the team as it focuses on the Ferrari relationship & Mick Schumacher’s prospects."
Haas were quick to condemn their young driver when the video surfaced, but believe Mazepin's public apology and internal disciplinary action is enough of a punishment.
"Haas F1 Team would like to reaffirm that Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher will form its driver line-up for the 2021 FIA Formula 1 World Championship," a team statement read.
"As per the team’s previous statement regarding the actions of Nikita Mazepin - this matter has now been dealt with internally and no further comment shall be made."
