Defending Super Smash champions Wellington were already well on top of rivals Northern, before veteran bowler Logan van Beek pulled off one of the best catches you'll see this summer.
Batting first, the Firebirds had compiled 185/7 off their 20 overs and had the Knights reeling at 65/5 nearing halfway in their response at Wellington's Basin Reserve.
As batsman Brett Hampton swung towards the boundary, his side were desperate for some big hitting to get them back in the match - but van Beek broke their hearts with an incredible full-length diving catch to send Hampton back to the pavilion.
Northern were eventually dismissed for just 105 in their 16th over, gifting the team from the capital victory by 80 runs.
The Wellington batting effort was led by opener Finn Allen, who bludgeoned 75 runs off 39 balls, while Blackcaps Devon Conway (45 off 35) and Tom Blundell (22) assisted.
International T20 wicketkeeper Tim Seifert was the best of the Knights, with 53 runs off 41 balls.
Earlier, Wellington Blaze women also accounted for the Northern Spirit, with bowler Leigh Kasperek taking 4/16 and unbeaten on 20 runs with the bat.
