Veteran Blackcap Ross Taylor has been ruled out of Saturday's one-day international series opener against Bangladesh.
Auckland batsman Mark Chapman has been called into the squad for the University Oval clash after Taylor succumbed to a small tear in his left hamstring.
NZ Cricket says Taylor sustained the injury on the final day of Central Stags' Plunket Shield victory over Wellington on the weekend.
Coach Gary Stead says Taylor should be cleared for game two at Hagley Oval next Tuesday.
"It's a shame for Ross to have this happen on the eve of a series," Stead says.
"It's a small tear and we're hopeful after some rest and rehabilitation we can get him fit for the second game in Christchurch.
"It's an exciting time for Mark who's come in and performed well recently for the T20 side, so we have full confidence he can do the job if called upon."
The three-match ODI series against Bangladesh is New Zealand's first in the qualifying series for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
