Australian Diamonds veteran Caitlin Bassett starred, as her Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic pipped Northern Mystics 64-60 in the final match of the ANZ Premiership opening round.
Despite a slow start that saw her goal-less for the opening five minutes, Bassett ended with 36 from 40 under the net, proving why the 32-year-old is such a prized recruit for the 2021 campaign.
Bassett also provided great support for young shooters Chiara Semple and Khiarna Williams, as the Magic provided serious problems for an under-the-pump Mystics defensive circle.
Defender Temalisi Fakahokotau was also excellent for the Magic, snaring several interceptions, including a crucial one late in the final quarter, as the Mystics were running down a seven-goal deficit.
Star Mystics shooter Grace Nweke struggled at the other end of the court, sinking 49 from 59 attempts, under serious examination from Fakahokotau and Erine Mikaere.
The Magic join Southern Steel and Northern Stars as first-round winners.
