Tokyo Olympics: Kiwi shot put ace Tom Walsh peaking ahead of Games tilt with dominating win in Nashville

Kiwi Tom Walsh has unleashed his longest throw since 2019, scoring a confidence-boosting victory at the Music City Track Carnival at Nashville, Tennessee.

The reigning Commonwealth Games shot put champion fired a 22.00m, third-round bomb to secure top spot and back-to-back wins, after his Diamond League triumph in Doha last month.

The throw was Walsh's best since the 2019 world championships, with the Kiwi starting to show the form that made him one of the best in the world.

Walsh threw 21.37m, then 21.66m, before his meet-winning throw, then 21.57m and 21.78m. He ended with foul, but he had done enough to claim victory.

The world indoor champion has struggled since his gold-winning performance on the Gold Coast in 2018, but as he eyes a spot atop the dais in Tokyo, the 29-year-old looks to be peaking at the right time.

Next up for Walsh is the Florence leg of the Diamond League on Friday (NZ time), when he will face stiff competition, including world No. 4 Michal Haratyk.
