Plenty of Kiwi football fans have flooded bars around the country to watch the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy.
The Italians won a tense match in penalties, topping England 3-2, after scores were level at a goal apiece at the final whistle.
Newshub was with about 500 England supporters at O'Hagans bar in central Auckland, experiencing two hours of mixed emotions - from the eruption when England fullback Luke Shaw scored in the second minute to the deflation of the Italia equaliser.
The fans rode the wave of emotions and the despair was finally evident, when Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Bakayo Sako's meek penalty attempt, handing the Italians victory.
"I can't have another 55 years of this, I'll tell you," says one fan.
"I'm proud," says another. "We made it to the final of the Euros for the first time and it's 55 years since we made a final of any Cup.
"I'm just immensely proud of what they have done."
As the result sunk in, despair turned to optimism over the 2022 Football World Cup, scheduled for Qatar.
"Give us another year and we will win that World Cup," says one fan. "This is a young squad and in [Gareth] Southgate we trust."
Across town, it was a different story at Gina's Italian Kitchen.
One Italian supporter was almost lost for words after cheering his side to victory.
"Look at my face, I am so excited," he says. "Unfortunately for England, they did not win the Cup, so it must go home to Italy.
"We were so patient - we so deserved this. So patient, and we play so positive and play lovely soccer."
Fifty-five years will turn to 56 by the time the World Cup rolls around and maybe then - finally - football will come home.
