The Blackcaps will head to the T20 World Cup with four spinners in a 15-man squad for the tournament - to be staged in the United Arab Emirates.
Leg-spinner Todd Astle and all-rounder Mark Chapman join short-form regulars Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi with slow bowling expected to dominate os spin-friendly wickets in the UAE.
The inclusion of Astle and Chapman means there is no place for Colin de Grandhomme or Hamish Bennett, while speedster Adam Milne will tour with the squad as injury cover.
New Zealand selectors have also named squads for lead-up tours of Bangladesh and Pakistan, citing player and staff welfare as the reason for a total of 32 players across the three teams.
Included in the squads are new caps Cole McConchie (Canterbury) and Ben Sears (Wellington), whole Firebirds coach Glenn Pocknall will lead the side on the Bangladesh and Pakistan legs, with Gary Stead rested.
Tom Lathan has been named captain for Bangladesh and Pakistan, with Stead and official skipper Kane Williamson to resume duties for the T20 World Cup and the test tour of India, with that squad to be announced next month.
NZC chief executive David White says changing times demanded changing strategies, with player welfare and support now one of professional sport's biggest challenges, particularly in the current pandemic environment.
"The need to safeguard the well-being of our players and support staff is now very real, and we've endeavoured to do this by carefully managing their workloads over this winter's massive playing programme," White says.
"As the Blackcaps proved in England earlier this year, we have good depth in the New Zealand game and I'm confident all the squads chosen will acquit themselves well."
White confirms Blackcaps involved in the prematurely suspended IPL would be allowed to re-join their franchises, and complete the competition when it re-starts in September.
