Former New Zealand international Shane Bond is returning to the Blackcaps coaching staff for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Bond, who took 87 test wickets in 18 tests had a three-year stint as New Zealand's bowling coach under Mike Hesson from 2012-15, and has since been in charge of the Sydney Thunder in Australia's Big Bash as well as stints in the IPL and with England.
The 46-year-old left his position with the Thunder earlier this year and has since been working with the White Ferns and New Zealand's men's training squads at Lincoln.
New Zealand Cricket says Bond will join up with the Blackcaps in the sub-continent following the rescheduled IPL21, which restarts in the UAE next month after being shut down because of India's COVID-19 issues.
Bond's official title is "fourth coach" and he will also remain with the squad for the three-game T20 series against India.
Head coach Gary Stead says it was great to add someone of Bond’s experience to the group.
"Shane’s been in our environment before and understands what we’re about," Stead says.
"Being in the UAE [with the IPL] immediately prior to the world cup … he’ll hopefully bring some tactical insight into what’s been happening in the competition.
"He’ll be an extra set of hands especially around the bowlers, working with the spin and the pace bowlers and developing their plans in a tournament that moves pretty quick - so we need to be one step ahead of other teams.
"Shane’s been working away with New Zealand players for a long time and he’s been involved in our recent camps so it’s been good for him to reacquaint himself with our guys.
"He’s held in high regard and I know he’ll bring a lot of knowledge and opinions to the group."
The T20 Cricket World Cup runs from October 17 - November 14 which the Blackcaps drawn to play India, Pakistan and Afganistan and two other sides.
