Golf: Inconsistent third round gives Lydia Ko mountain to climb at last day of LPGA's British Open

Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko faces a tough task to win the LPGA's British Open, sitting eight shots behind the leaders into the final round at Carnoustie.

Beginning her third round in a tie for 31st at one-under, Ko's hopes of a drought-breaking third Major title evaporated.

The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist carded bogeys on the second and ninth holes to complete her front nine at one over par, quickly losing pace with the leaders.

Two more bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes saw Ko drop even further back at three over.

But in typical fashion, the Kiwi wasn't going to die wondering, peeling off three straight birdies on the 12th, 13th and 14th holes to drop back to an even par.

One final birdie on the 18th saw Ko return to where she'd started the day, finishing her round with an even-par 72.

Despite her strong finish, Ko still has a mountain to climb, if she's to challenge for the title in the final round.

The Kiwi sits eight shots behind the leading pair, Sweden's Anna Nordqvist and Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen, both sitting at nine under par.

Overnight leaders Georgia Hall of England and Mina Harigae of USA dropped to a tie for eighth and 27th respectively.
