Scott Dixon has fallen to third in the IndyCar championship standings after a 17th placed finish at the IMS Big Machine Grand Prix in Indianapolis.
Starting from 26th on the grid, Chip Ganassi driver Dixon made up nine places over the course of the 85 lap race, finishing 17.1924 seconds behind race winner, Team Penske's Will Power.
Dale Coyne Racing's Romain Grosjean finished second, while Andretti's Colton Herta completed the podium in third.
But after starting the race weekend second on the IndyCar championship ladder, Dixon has been overtaken by Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward.
O'Ward, who started on pole, finished fifth on the grid but secured enough championship points to move ahead of Dixon, leading the Kiwi by 13 points.
In welcome news for both Dixon and O'Ward though, championship leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi failed to finish after a mechanical issue, closing the gap in the race to become the 2021 IndyCar champion.
Palou's lead over second-placed O'Ward has been cut to 21 points, and 34 points over third-placed Dixon.
Elsewhere, fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske finished 23rd, having been penalised after making contact with Ed Carpenter Racing's Rinus VeeKay.
There are four races left in the 2021 IndyCar season, with the Grand Prix of Portland to be staged in Oregon next week.
