Kiwis star Shaun Johnson has seized an opportunity to make an early homecoming ahead of his new two-year deal with NZ Warriors.
Johnson has been granted an early release from his contract with Cronulla Sharks so he, wife Kayla Johnson (née Cullen) and their daughter Millah could take advantage of securing a spot in a managed isolation facility. They landed in New Zealand on Wednesday night.
In light of the limited availability for MIQ spaces, the Sharks were willing to allow Johnson to terminate his contract with a month remaining.
Injury had ruled Johnson out of any further play with the Sharks this season, although his premature departure still reportedly meant forfeiting $60,000.
The 30-year-old finishes with 44 appearances for the Sharks, who he joined in 2019, after eight seasons and 162 games with the Warriors.
"We acknowledge and thank Shaun for his three years at the Sharks," said Sharks Chief executive Dino Mezzatesta.
"Shaun was the ultimate professional on the field, the highlight being him winning the Porter Gallen Medal as the Club's best after an outstanding 2020 season.
"He was also popular and always engaging with our members, fans and corporate partners in making a significant contribution off the field as well.
"Everybody at the Sharks wishes him a speedy and full recovery from his current injury and all the best for his return to the Warriors in 2022."
Johnson paid a parting tribute to the club and its fans.
"I can't thank the Club, staff, members and fans enough for the past three seasons," Johnson wrote in a statement on the team's website.
"I've loved every minute in the black, white and blue, suiting up with the boys each week is something I never take for granted and thank them for welcoming me and making Cronulla my home away from home.
"Although it's not the way I wanted it to finish, I leave with a smile and good relationships. UpUp!."
