Cricket: White Ferns' losing streak against England continues in opening Twenty 20 international

The White Ferns' domination at the hands of England has continued, after falling to a comprehensive 46-run loss in their opening Twenty20 international at Chelmsford.

After losing the toss and sent into bat first, the hosts responded by applying full throttle from the outset against a hapless NZ attack, with opener Tammy Beaumont's magnificent 97 setting the platform for a daunting target of 185 at the expense of just four wickets.

The White Ferns chase began in nightmare fashion, as the vaunted return of star opening duo Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine amounted to just four runs, with both dismissed inside three overs.

Ever-reliable Amy Satterthwaite (43) provided some resistance for the tourists, but her batting partners collapsed around her, as the White Ferns were dismissed for 138 in the 19th over.

The defeat is the White Ferns' eighth straight in the T20 format against England, who swept the series in New Zealand earlier this year 3-0.

New Zealand were their own worst enemies in the field, providing Beaumont with several lives with sloppy catching, including two shelled chances by Devine.

"I think we leaked too many runs in the field and it obviously didn't help when I dropped two catches," says the NZ captain. "It's a bit of a shame.

"Credit has got to go to Tammy Beaumont - she batted magnificently and it probably got away on us a little bit.

"We knew how good this wicket was. We know it's a quick outfield and 180 was probably a touch over par."

The NZ women will have a chance to snap that skid in the second T20 in Hove on Sunday.
