NPC 2021: Last-gasp converted try salvages victory for Bay of Plenty over Wellington at Rotorua

Winger Emoni Narawa's extra-time try - converted by Otere Black - has seen Bay of Plenty snatch a dramatic 33-32 National Provincial Championship victory over Wellington at Rotorua.

After 80 minutes, when momentum swung one way and then the other, the visiting Lions led 32-26, scoring three unconverted tries to rally from nine points behind midway through the second half.

But with added time ticking away, the Steamers had one last chance to snatch victory with a five-metre scrum in front of the posts and reserve halfback Luke Campbell found Narawa storming onto the ball to score. First-five Black still needed to convert to win, but did so with ease.

Wellington actually scored six tries to their rivals' five, but could only convert one, while Black and Campbell added extra points on four for Bay of Plenty.

Each team produced two tries in a closely contested first half, with Winger Alefosio Tapili and lock Justin Sangster crossing for Bay - both converted by Blake - while hooker James O'Reilly and winger Tomasi Alosio scored for Wellington.

Trailling 14-12 at the break, the Lions struck first, with Aidan Morgan scoring soon after the restart, but winger Leroy Carter and Pasilio Tosi responded fo give Bay of Plenty their biggest advantage of the match.

Wellington swept back into a late lead, with replacements Sam Smith, Tyrone Thompson and Richard Judd recording five-pointers, but the lack of extra points from the boot would come back to haunt them.

The result sees the Steamers tied with Canterbury and Tasman for third on the premiership table, although they have played an extra game. Tasman host Southland on Sunday, while Canterbury are idle this weekend, but face Wellington on Friday.

Bay of Plenty 33 (Alefosio Tapili, Justin Sangster, Leroy Carter, Pasilio Tosi, Emoni Narawa tries; Otere Black 3 conversions, Luke Campbell conversion) Wellington 32 (James O'Reilly, Tomasi Alosio, Aidan Morgan, Sam Smith, Tyrone Thompson, Richard Judd, tries; Ruben Love conversion)

Back-to-back wins for Turbos

Meanwhile, Manawatū have consolidated their standing on the championship table, outlasting Otago 27-14 at Palmerston North - their first victory over their southern rivals since 2014.

With All Blacks halback Aaron Smith chirping behind a dominant pack, the Turbos steamrolled their undone opponents early, scoring two converted tries to Tim Fainga'anuku and Josiah Maraku, before Otago found the scoreboard.

Since losing to Hawke's Bay on August 14 in the second round, the southerners have been sidelined, initially by COVID-19 lockdown, and more recently by the Alert Level 3 status of Counties Manukau and North Harbour.

Dylan Nel scored their opening try to trail 17-7 at the break, but immediately after the restart, playing into the wind, Jarred Adams extended Manawatū's advantage and broke the visitors' spirit.

By the time Otago scored their second try through James Lentjes, they were 20 points behind and never a real chance of a comeback.

Former All Blacks first-five Brett Cameron converted all three Turbos tries, adding two penalties for good measure.

Manawatū sit five points behind only Taranaki on the championship table, with three wins from four games, and will travel to Invercargill to face Southland next Sunday, while Otago must bounce back against Taranaki on Saturday.

Manawatū 27 (Tima Fainga'anuku, Josiah Maraku, Jarred Adams tries; Brett Cameron 3 conversions, 2 penalties) Otago 14 (Dylan Nel & James Lentjes tries; Josh Ioane 2 conversions)
