New Zealand have finished fifth in the latest round of SailGP, even after the Kiwi team picked up a race win off the coast of Cadiz in Spain.
After ending the first day's racing with a fifth and two sixth-placed finishes, New Zealand needed to begin the second day positively for any hope of finishing in the fleet's top three to reach the medal race.
And they did just that, winning the regatta's fourth race to give Peter Burling his first victory at the helm of the New Zealand boat. The win gave the Kiwis eight points, while Sir Ben Ainslie's Great Britain took second place and Jimmy Spithill's USA third.
But Burling couldn't replicate that success in the fifth and final fleet race, settling for sixth place and finishing the event fifth on the leaderboard to miss out on the medal race.
After light winds caused disruption on the first day of racing, heavier gusts reaching up to 25 knots, then played havoc with the fleet.
Hosts Spain capsized early in the day's practice session, before Great Britain did the same in the medal race, effectively turning the contest into a twoway shootout between Australia and Japan.
Led by Tom Slingsby, Australia sailed home to take victory in the medal race, winning the Spain leg of SailGP and returning to the top of the overall leaderboard.
Australia hold the series lead with 45 points, followed by USA (44) in second, Japan (44) in third and Great Britain (40) fourth. New Zealand are fifth on the leaderboard with 36 points.
The next leg of SailGP will be sailed in Sydney in December.
