NZ Breakers could be without captain Tom Abercrombie for up to six weeks, after he suffered an injury in Thursday's ANBL pre-season victory over Sydney Kings.
Abercrombie limped off court during the opening minutes of Thursday night's encounter in Melbourne, suffering a side strain.
"The prognosis they said is four to six weeks, but the physio and the doctor haven't seen anything like this before," says the 34-year-old.
"So there's not a whole lot for them to go off in terms of recovery times, so it's going to be one of those ones where you wait and see how it pulls up."
But despite the loss of Abercrombie for the immediate future, the Breakers' captain is hopeful of returning to full speed for the start of the ANBL season against South East Melbourne Phoenix on December 4.
"While it's unfortunate it has happened in pre-season, we haven't started the season yet.
"We've got two more pre-season games to work on rotations, and next man up will be ready to step up and play well."
The Breakers continue their pre-season preparations with games against the Phoenix on Saturday, and Illawarra Hawks on November 25.
