Cricket: Central Stags wicket-keeper Dane Cleaver plunders 48-ball century in Super Smash win over Otago

Central Stags wicketkeeper-batsman Dane Cleaver plundered one of New Zealand's fastest T20 centuries as the Stags beat Otago by five wickets in their Super Smash game in Dunedin.

Volts' former Blackcaps opener Hamish Rutherford scored 82 as Otago made an imposing 184/4 batting first at University Oval.

Backed by Neil Broom (30), Nick Kelly (24) and Anaru Kitchen (25), the left-hander powered seven sixes and four fours in 47-ball stay after the homeside decided to bat first.

But the Stags' chase was always on track to run down the hefty target thanks to Cleaver's imperious knock.

Recovering from 9/1, Cleaver and opener Greg Hay (56) added record 154 for the second-wicket in 89 balls to push Central Districts within touching distance of a stunning win.

Hay, playing his first T20 match in seven years hit six boundaries before he was run out with four overs to go, but by that point, the Stage only needed 30 more runs for victory.

There was a slight wobble in the middle-order with four wickets falling for 18 runs, but Cleaver remained calm finishing the match with an over to spare.

Earlier Suzy Bates scored 64 as the Otago Sparks beat the Central Hinds by eight runs in the women's Super Smash competition.
