A-League: Newcastle Jets player tests positive for COVID-19 days after clash against Wellington Phoenix

In the space of a week, a second A-League player has tested positive for COVID-19, just days after playing against Wellington Phoenix.

Newcastle Jets have confirmed the fully vaccinated player became symptomatic on Monday and returned a positive test on Tuesday.

On Friday, the Jets scored a resounding 4-0 win over the Phoenix, who confirm none of their players or staff have been identified as a close contact of the player in question and have all returned negative tests over the past four days.

The Phoenix are scheduled to play Avondale in the FFA Cup knockout competition on Tuesday night.

The latest case comes a week after Sydney FC's Rhyan Grant returned a positive test result.

After the Jets case, all other Newcastle players and staff had PCR tests in addition to their daily rapid antigen tests, and none have returned positive results.

"The Jets will continue to work with the A-League and NSW Health, and an update regarding the upcoming weekend's game against Macarthur FC will be provided in the next 24 hours," the club says.
