Parker v Chisora II: Joseph Parker 2.0 ready to show improvements in crucial rematch

Joseph Parker promises something new in his heavyweight rematch against Derek Chisora at Manchester's AO Arena on Sunday (NZ time).

The two ranked heavyweight boxing contenders meet for the second time this year, after the Kiwi earned a contentious split-decision win over the veteran slugger in May.

That fight marked Parker's first under new trainer Andy Lee and despite an early setback, when the former world champion was knocked down in the opening seconds, his conditioning served him well enough to eke out a victory.

But the 29-year-old has his eyes on more convincing performance second time round, after spending close to three months at Morcambe, England, training under Lee at Tyson Fury's famed MTK Global gym.

Parker has trained alongside the Fury clan - including heavyweight champion Tyson - in the lead-up to the fight, but the work he has put in under Lee’s tutelage has him confident his improvement will show through.

"This fight, we want to show a bit more of a different side and the only way you can show that is by practicing hard every day," Parker tells Newshub.

"I've put in some great work here with Andy. Every session has been very intense and when it's time to work, we have put the work in.

"The environment we are in is a great environment, with great fighters who are all aspiring to be world champions in boxing."

Parker says the camp has been his “best ever” - an overused phrase in the fight game - but he says the proof will be in the result.

Chisora's gameplan offers no surprises - pressure and power - so for Parker, it's about the changes he has made from the first fight, where he struggled through the first four rounds to handle that intensity.

"I back myself, and I back my speed and power, and I will go out and show it.

"I don't want to say too much, because I have let people down when I have said that in the past, but I truly believe what we have accomplished in this camp and what we have been practicing every single day, I will put that fully on display."

If the win comes as planned, the second-ranked WBO contender sees a clear path to another crack at the top of the division, but he will have to go through undefeated Brit Joe Joyce, another ranked in the top 10 of three of boxing's big four organisations.

The 2016 Olympic silver medallist has decimated 12 of his 13 opponents since turning professional four years ago, knocking off three top-15 fighters - Carlos Takam, Daniel Dubois, Bryant Jennings - in his last four bouts.

Parker almost inked a deal to fight Joyce, before the Chisora rematch was confirmed, but he is willing to fight anyone that edges him closer to challenging Fury or newly-crowned IBF, WBO and IBF champion Oleksandr Usyk.

"I'm 29 now and I know I'm only going to be in the sport for 4-5 more years," Parker says. "I want to give it everything I have and If I get this win, it opens up more doors to big fights.

"Lock me in with any fighter - I don't care who it is. If I fight the best in the world, then I position myself for a title shot, whenever it becomes available.

“I just have to win-win-win."
