New Zealand-born rugby player Kawa Leauma has died after being critically injured in a reported fall in Amsterdam.
Leauma, 32, was on international duty with the Spanish national side in Amsterdam for a European Championship match against the Netherlands.
After Spain won the encounter 52-7, Leauma is reported to have fallen eight metres from a building and suffered serious head injuries.
Leauma did not play in the match, withdrawn late because of doubts over his eligibility to represent Spain. Leauma had represented Spain in one unofficial match against Italy in October 2021.
"We regret to announce the death this past night of Kawa Leauma, AMPO Ordizia and XV del León player, who last Saturday suffered an accident after the match between Spain against the Netherlands in Amsterdam," the Spanish Rugby Federation says.
"At the express wish of his wife, who is currently travelling to the Dutch capital, at the moment we cannot give more information and we ask for the utmost respect for her and her entire family. Rest in peace, Kawa."
Leauma represented a number of Auckland clubs during his time in New Zealand, including Manukau Rovers, Mt Wellington, Otahuhu and Papatoetoe. Leauma also represented Samoa at under-20 level.
