Premier League: Newcastle defeat Leeds, Manchester United edge West Ham, Manchester City draw with Southampton

A late goal from Jonjo Shelvey has earned Newcastle United a 1-0 win at Leeds United on Sunday (NZ time), the second time Eddie Howe's side have tasted victory in the Premier League this season.

With new Kiwi signing Chris Wood starting upfront, the hosts had the better of an entertaining first half, with speedy forward Dan James denied by an excellent save from Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka early on.

Despite continuing in the ascendancy after the break Leeds, without injured striker Patrick Bamford, could not find a breakthrough, and their inability to make the pressure pay proved costly as Shelvey squeezed a 75th-minute free-kick home.

Leeds threw everything at Newcastle late on, but they still could not apply the finishing touch, as Marcelo Bielsa's side suffered their first defeat in three league games.

The victory was a crucial one for the visitors, who climbed to 18th in the standings, one point from the safety zone, having played one game fewer than Norwich City in 17th, and seven points behind Leeds in 15th.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's Marcus Rashford scored a last-second winner, as they beat West Ham United 1-0 at Old Trafford to move up to fourth spot in the standings.

Substitute Rashford tapped in a low cross from Edinson Cavani deep into stoppage time, after United had broken down the left flank with the final move of the match.

The win means United move above West Ham with 38 points from 22 matches, while the Hammers are now fifth on 37 from 23.

"The atmosphere (in the dressing room) is amazing," said coach Ralf Rangnick.

"Quite rightly the boys were celebrating. They know what a massive win this was.

"Those are the best kind of wins when the other team has not time to come back. We are extremely happy with the performance and the level of physicality we played with bearing in mind we played three days ago at Brentford."

Manchester City's long winning run in the Premier League finally came to an end, as the leaders were held to a 1-1 draw away at Southampton.

Seeking a 13th successive victory, Pep Guardiola's side were rocked early on, as Kyle Walker-Peters's superb finish gave Southampton a surprise lead.

Southampton were good value for their advantage and could have scored more against an unusually lacklustre City.

The hosts had more chances early in the second half but City finally got into their stride and Aymeric Laporte headed them level from Kevin De Bruyne's delivery in the 65th minute.

City took charge after that with de Bruyne thumping a shot against the post but Southampton dug in for a well-deserved share of the spoils.

City have 57 points from 23 games with Liverpool on 45, albeit having played two fewer games. Southampton are 12th with 25 points.
