Football: Defender Meikayla Moore scores perfect hat-trick of own goals as New Zealand crushed by USA

Football Ferns defender Meikayla Moore endured a horrendous outing in New Zealand's 5-0 loss to USA at the SheBelieves Cup, scoring a perfect hat-trick of own goals.

A perfect hat-trick sees a player score with their head as well as both feet, and Moore did just that as the Football Ferns took on the reigning world champions in Los Angeles.

"Each player who has played (football), and it doesn't matter what level, has great games and tough games, and Mouse (Moore) had a tough day at the office," New Zealand coach Jitka Klimkova said afterwards.

"Obviously, she's sad and disappointed, but she's an unbelievable person and player who belongs on this team.

"We are all behind her in this tough moment for her."

In the fifth minute of the Football Ferns' second SheBelieves Cup match, following a defeat to Iceland that saw New Zealand concede inside the opening 60 seconds, Moore was unfortunate as her attempted right footed clearance after a cross from the left, sliced into the back of the net past goalkeeper Erin Nayler.

Then, just over a minute later, Moore doubled the USA's lead, as a cross from the right was turned past Nayler again, this time off her head.

Moore then completed her unwanted hat-trick before halftime, as another cross from the right was turned into her own net - this time with her left foot to complete the perfect hat-trick.

Her misery was soon completed, as Moore was substituted before halftime, making way for Rebekah Stott after just 40 minutes.

Leading 3-0 at halftime, USA managed to score through one of their own players in the second spell, as forward Ashley Hatch headed another cross from the right past a diving Nayler to make it 4-0 in the 51st minute.

And in the final minutes of stoppage time, Mallory Pugh scored the USA's fifth, coming off the bench before racing past the Football Ferns' defence to beat Nayler.

At the other end of the pitch, the Football Ferns failed to consistently trouble the USA defence, only managing one shot on target for the course of the 90 minutes, which didn't trouble goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

Defeat leaves the Football Ferns bottom of the SheBelieves Cup standings, winless from their opening two matches before their finale against Czech Republic on Thursday (NZ time).

USA 5 (Moore own goal 5', 6', 36', Hatch 51', Pugh 90+3') NZ 0.
