Football Ferns finish SheBelieves Cup campaign with goal-less draw against Czech Republic

The Football Ferns have closed out their SheBelieves Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw against Czech Republic at Dallas.

The NZ women were able to hold on in the face of relentless pressure from the Czechs, who couldn't capitalise on their huge territory advantage through the second half.

The result means the Football Ferns finish the quadrangular tournament winless and at the bottom of the table, after earlier losses to the USA and Iceland.

Lifted by the return of key player Hannah Wilkinson, the Ferns started the game strongly, enjoying most of the possession.

The Czech side created the best goalscoring opportunity of a tightly contested first half, with Michaela Khrova deftly controlling a lobbed pass to turn and fire, only to be denied by a sharp save from NZ goalkeeper Victoria Esson.

Abby Erceg's injection to the starting XI also provided a boost to the NZ defence, with Meikayla Moore left out of the game-day squad, after her hat-trick of own goals against the USA.

The Ferns' best chance of the match came in the 53rd minute, when CJ Bott stole the ball at halfway and streaked 40m into the penalty box, before sending her shot at goal into the side netting.

That opportunity was very much against the run of play, as Czech Republic dictated proceedings in the second stanza, but were unable to find the breakthrough they needed, twice hitting the posts.
