South Africa are probably just in front, all things considered.

The Proteas lead by 211 runs heading into day four, but have lost half their side already.

The Blackcaps' bowlers, led by Southee and Wagner, have ensured New Zealand can at least put up a fight in their quest for victory.

But the Kiwis will need to take the last five wickets as quickly as possible, and won't want to chase any more than 300 in the fourth innings.

That'll be it from us today, but we'll be back at 11am tomorrow for day four - so join us then!

3:45pm - TEA

You'd probably have to give that session to the Blackcaps.

South Africa are 42/3 - but effectively 113/3 given their 71-run lead. Conditions are still good for the bowlers, so the final session will be key for the Blackcaps' chances of restricting South Africa.

2:15pm

De Grandhomme walks off, unbeaten on 120, to applause from his teammates, South Africa, and the gathered crowd in attendance.

Southee will face after lunch, who'll take the ball for the Proteas?

1:39pm

Good afternoon, this is Alex Powell taking over from Grant Chapman.

We're just about ready to get underway for the afternoon session. The looming question will be how close can the Blackcaps get to South Africa?

They're running out of batters, but an hour of Colin de Grandhomme in full flight would change the game completely.

1pm - Southee comes to the wicket and he's usually there for a good time, not a long time. He may need to temper his approach today, but can he?

Southee plays through the area where Jamieson got caught and opens his account with two against Maharaj.

The whole field converges on CDG for the final ball of the session and he advances down the pitch, but completely loses poise as he edges over the close fielder.

That's lunch, NZ 253/7

12:43pm - Maharaj continues to CDG, still within one shot of his century. He takes a single down the ground, NZ 241/6

12:10pm - Maharaj to CDG, with fielders lurking close. A maiden, NZ 221/5

12:04pm - Always a danger of losing concentration during a drinks break. Would be good to get some stats on how often a batter falls within a couple of overs...

Sipamla continues and CDG takes a single to enter the 90s. Mitchell has to send CDG back to avoid a runout, NZ 221/5

11:59am - Maharaj continues to de Grandhomme. Just a single, NZ 220/5

11:26am - Jansen continues his spell and de Grandhomme drives through cover for three.

Mitchelle drives straight for two, but tries to pull and misses altogether, losing some poise, NZ 184/5

11:22am - Radaba into his third over - it's a maiden to Mitchell, NZ 179/5

11:18am - Jansen into his third over and Mitchell squirts an edge behind square leg for two, then hooks, top-edging over the keeper for four. That'll give the bowlers some encouragement.

CDG ducks under a low bouncer on the last ball, NZ 161/5

****

Kia ora, good morning and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the second test between New Zealand and South Africa at Christchurch's Hagley Oval.

The third morning finds the Blackcaps scrambling to limit the first-innings damage, after letting the Proteas tail wag a bit and then collapsing slightly to traill by 207 runs with only five wickets in hand at the close of play Saturday.

All-rounders Colin de Grandhomme and Daryl Mitchell are desperately trying to a) avoid the follow-on and b) reduce their deficit, before the NZ tail is exposed.

This is a very different South African performance to the one that resulted in an innings-and-276-run defeat at the same venue last week and the home side will need to pull something special out of the bag to secure a much-needed win in their World Test Championship defence.

A draw would still see New Zealand defeat South Africa in a series for the first time, but that still seems a long way away.

De Grandhomme showed considerable restraint, despite smashing a 36-ball fifty yesterday, and these two will need to stick around a bit this morning. While all our bowlers have shown some ability with the bat, we can't rely on them to rescue their side from this predicament.

South Africa 364 (Erwee 108, Wagner 4/102) New Zealand 157/5 (de Grandhomme 54 not out, Nicholls 39,  Rabada 3/37)

South Africa lead by 207 runs
