SA 261/4

11:36am - 98 overs

Henry continues, needing a wicket. Bavuma on strike.

WICKET! And he's got it! Henry fractionally holds back a yorker, and Bavuma is beaten by the lack of pace, losing off-stump. No real swing there, just Bavuma missing the ball! He goes for 29. Kyle Verreynne is next in.

Verreynne takes guard to face Henry. Straight first up, and Verreynne defends to square leg. Beauty next up! He just misses off-stump as Verreynne plays down the wrong line.

Chance! Verreynne clips one to square leg, where Young gets down to field it. Run out chance at the bowler's end, but Young can't hit the stumps. Verreynne's staying down, he's banged his head diving into his crease. He'll need a concussion test. He looks good to carry on.

SA 257/3

11:19am - 95 overs

Southee to Bavuma, can he make ammends for that dropped catch?

Southee drops one in short with his fifth ball, but Bavuma swivels back and pulls a boundary through square leg.

SA 256/3

11:15am - 94 overs

Henry to van der Dussen.

Dropped! Henry finds van der Dussen's edge, and the ball carries to Southee at third slip - but he's spilled it! Van der Dussen's given a life on 21.

Chance! And another chance! Van der Dussen punches a straight drive back to the bowler, but it drops just short of Henry, they run three straight down the ground, and raise the 50-run partnership.

Bavuma with two to face. Short to finish, and Bavuma stands tall to drive through cover for three off the back foot.

SA 252/3

11:11am - 93 overs

Bavuma to face. And he plays out the rest of the over without scoring.

SA 246/3

11:07am - 92 overs

SA 241/3

11:03am - 91 overs

It'll be Tim Southee to have first use of the ball. Over the wicket to Bavuma.

Outswing first ball of the day, and Bavuma leaves. Straighter next up, not as much movement as Bavuma defends on the front foot.

Wide and swinging away next, and Bavuma lets it go through to Blundell. Straighter, but still wide from Southee with ball four, and Bavuma can leave it again.

Wider on the crease from Southee, he goes short and Bavuma looks to cut - but misses. Wide to finish, Bavuma lets it go. Maiden to start the day.

SA 238/3

10:59am

Both sets of players make their way to the middle.

Temba Bavuma will take strike for the first ball of the day. Who'll open up for the Blackcaps?

10:50am

South Africa's batting coach Justin Sammons is outlining that the Proteas need to go big this innings, having already made more runs than both innings of the first test combined.

But this ball is just 10 overs old, so don't expect the Kiwi quicks to go down without a fight!

10:30am

Good morning! We should be in for another exciting day of test cricket at Hagley Oval.

South Africa are to resume at 238/3, eyeing a substantial first innings to put the Blackcaps under scoreboard pressure.

New Zealand meanwhile need wickets, and fast. On what should have been a bowler's day yesterday, the Kiwi attack only struck three times, as the Proteas set a platform that they'll know they can build on today.

We're about 30 minutes away from the resumption, so stay tuned.

Kia ora, good morning and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of day two of the second test between the Blackcaps and South Africa at Christchurch.

What a difference a week makes. This time last week on the same ground, South Africa were on the verge of defeat by an innings and 276 runs, bowled out for 95 and 111.

Fast forward to today, and the Proteas are 238/3 after a solid first day at Hagley Oval, coming after skipper Dean Elgar raised eyebrows by choosing to bat in bowler friendly conditions.

South Africa were led on Friday by a superb maiden test century to opener Sarel Erwee, but hopes for today rest on the pair of Rassie van der Dussen (13 not out) and Temba Bavuma (22 not out).

But if there's one thing we've learned about this Blackcaps side in recent years, it's that they very rarely have two bad days in a row.

In what have turned out to be decent conditions to bat in, the Blackcaps have still, so far, restricted South Africa to less than three runs per over, meaning quick wickets today will keep the visitors' first innings total in touching distance, with the pitch only getting better to bat on.

First though, the Blackcaps will need to take the final seven South African wickets, with a ball that's only 10 overs old.
