Super Rugby Pacific: Teams take advantage of life in Queenstown bubble, as start of competition looms

Just days out from the start of the competition, the NZ-based Super Rugby Pacific sides are making the most of life in their Queenstown bubble.

Last week, positive cases in the Moana Pasifika squad forced the postponement of their competition debut against the Blues on Friday.

But while the teams are adhering to strict protocol to prevent COVID-19 causing any further disruption, that doesn’t mean they're being confined to the training pitch and their hotel rooms.

On Wednesday, a dozen Chiefs players hit the links for a spot of golf at the picturesque Arrowtown Golf Club, and the Crusaders had the same idea.

"I've lost a few balls," said Crusaders back Simon Hickey. "[Golf] s one of the few things we can do."

COVID-19 safe activities like golf are deemed important for players' wellbeing, while they're separated from their loved ones in central Otago.

And New Zealand's adventure capital has plenty of socially distanced activities on offer, including mountain biking and, of course, a swim in the lake.

"We're actually lakefront so there's been a few swims after training," says Highlanders pivot Mitch Hunt. "We have been able to get down there and freshen up."

Also refreshing are some of the perks that come with staying in a team hotel, especially the buffet table and laundry service.

Bubble life clearly isn't all bad.
