Football: Depleted Wellington Phoenix men crushed by rampant Newcastle Jets in A-League mismatch

Understrength Wellington Phoenix have been handed a chastening A-League defeat, losing 4-0 to Newcastle Jets.

Without several first-team regulars, on international duty with the All Whites, the Phoenix were outclassed in every department, as the Jets took control of the match in the second half.

After halftime arrived with scores locked at 0-0, the floodgates opened, with Newcastle taking full toll.

Just six minutes into the second half, Olivier Boumal scored his side's first, firing past goalkeeper Alex Paulsen - playing in place of Oli Sail on international duty - after a saved shot from Daniel Penha fell into the left-winger's path.

Boumal was in the action again just 12 minutes later, beating Paulsen with a low shot driven into the bottom corner of the net to double Newcastle's lead.

Four minutes later, striker Beka Mikeltadze beat Paulsen for a third time, cutting back inside, before curling a shot into the corner of the net with his left foot. In just 14 minutes, the Phoenix had fallen three goals down.

Substitute Eli Babalj completed the rout seven minutes from time, leaping to connect with a cross from the left flank to beat Paulsen with a powerful header.

Already weakened by injuries to captain Alex Rufer, as well as Reno Piscopo and Oskar van Hattum, manager Ufuk Talay's woes were compounded, when Jaushua Sotirio was replaced with what appeared to be a hamstring concern.

Defeat leaves the Phoenix seventh on the A-League ladder - albeit with two games in hand over sixth-placed Sydney FC - and only sitting outside playoff contention on goal difference.
