Golf: Kiwi Lydia Ko in contention after opening round at LPGA Women's World Championship

Kiwi golf star Lydia Ko has had to produce a miraculous shot from the water to stay in contention during the LPGA Women's World Championship at Singapore.

After bogeying the fourth hole of her opening round, Ko's tee shot at the par-five fifth came to rest on the edge of a giant lake, leaving her with a drop or a trick shot to find the fairway.

The world No.3 took off her shoes and waded knee-deep into the lake, short-gripped her club and chipped her ball back to safety, ultimately missing a 30ft putt for birdie, but leaving commentators wary about what nasties might lurk beneath the water.

Ko finished the round tied for fifth, two shots behind American rival Danielle Khang and Thai Patty Tavatanakit, after carding a three-under-par 69, including a disastrous double bogey on the final hole, when she was tied for the lead.

Last month, the Kiwi headed Khang by two shots to win the Gainbridge tournament in Florida - her 17th LPGA Tour victory, since turning debuting as an amateur in 2012.

The previous week, Khang captured the season-opening Tournament of Champions, while Tavatanakit is the reigning ANA Inspiration champion.
