White Ferns stars Suzie Bates, Frankie Mackay relieved after first win of tournament

The White Ferns are relieved they're on the board in their home Cricket World Cup.

New Zealand beat Bangladesh by nine wickets, chasing 141 with 42 balls to spare, in a rain-affected match in Dunedin on Monday.

It came after the side lost their opening clash of the tournament to the West Indies by three runs on Friday at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

While victory over Bangladesh has given the side some much-needed confidence, the challenges only get harder from here.

"Lovely to go with a win, the sun's out as well, so very nice of Dunedin," all-rounder Frankie Mackay says.

The sun was missing in their win over Bangladesh, leaving even the locals to wonder whether they'd be able to claim some much-needed points.

"[We] sorta talked about getting to the 20th over and making a game of it because I thought the skies could open up at any point, but thankfully, Dunedin held off," Suzie Bates says.

Dunedin did its job, as did Bates and Amelia Kerr in New Zealand's chase, as the pair shared an unbeaten 108-run second-wicket stand

"The drizzle just sort of hung around and it was getting darker," Bates continues.

"It was actually quite a good gauge for Melie [Kerr] and I to stick with, if we were above that Duckworth-Lewis run rate, and we only were one wicket down, it was a good place to be."

And after being upset by the West Indies in their opening game, getting on the board has given the side some much-needed confidence for their next game, against India at Hamilton on Thursday.

"But I think it was the nature we played under," adds Bates. "Sitting at the hotel thinking that we might not be playing, and then we just turned up and got the job done."

"We're on the board, and onto Hamilton we go," Mackay says.
