Hurricanes halfback TJ Perenara has recovered quicker than expected from a knee injury and will make his highly anticipated return to the side for this weekend's clash with the Chiefs, Newshub understands.
Perenara suffered an MCL injury during pre-season training in Queenstown, forcing him to miss the opening four rounds of Super Rugby Pacific.
The 78-test halfback was closing in on a return last week, before their clash with Moana Pasifika was postponed due to an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Hurricanes squad.
But Perenara's knee is understood to have healed well, meaning the 30-year-old will pull on a Hurricanes jersey for the first time in nearly two years, after missing last year's Aotearoa and Trans-Tasman campaigns, after a stint playing in Japan.
The Hurricanes clash with the Chiefs is shaping as the sole New Zealand fixture this weekend, with the Highlanders clash with Moana Pasifika and the Blues match against the Crusaders both in doubt due to COVID-19 outbreaks.
