A change to France's vaccine mandates has improved tennis star Novak Djokovic's chances of playing at the French Open.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex has announced vaccine passports will no longer be needed to access venues from March 14, potentially opening a path for the unvaccinated Djokovic to attempt to win his 21st Grand Slam.

The 34-year-old is the defending champion at Roland Garros, which begins on May 22.

Vaccination is still a requirement to play in the Untied States, meaning Djokovic won't be able to play in March's Masters Series events in Indian Wells and Miami.

In February, Djokovic defended his right to choose whether to get the coronavirus vaccine, which led to being deported from Australia in January and missing the Australian Open.

Since then, the Serbian has only played one tournament, losing in the quarter-finals in Dubai last month.

The defeat cost him his world No.1 ranking, with Russian Daniil Medvedev leapfrogging him into the top spot.
