Golf: Kiwi Lydia Ko drops off pace after second round at Chevron Championship

Kiwi Lydia Ko has dropped down the leaderboard, after the second round of the Chevron Championship at California on Saturday (NZ time).

Starting the day just two shots off the lead after a superb opening round, Ko shot a one-over 73 to fall to three-under overall at the first Major of the year.

She's now six shots off the pace, sitting in a nine-way share of 20th place at the Mission Hills Country Club's Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

The world No. 3 carded three birdies and four bogeys, while Japan's Hinako Shibuno vaulted to the top of leaderboard on the back of a six-under par 66.

First-round co-leader Jennifer Kupcho shot 70 and is tied for second with Annie Park (second-round 67) and defending champion Patty Tavatanakit of Thailand (69) at eight-under.

Two South Korean golfers, Sei Young Kim and Hyo Joo Kim, each shot 67, leaving them tied for fifth at seven under.

Ally Ewing (second-round 68) and Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen (67) share seventh place at six under.

The other opening-round co-leader, Australia's Minjee Lee, slipped to a 73 dropping her into a seven-way tie for ninth at five under.

Shibuno won the 2019 Women's British Open in her major-tournament debut, but she has made the cut in just half of her eight subsequent majors. A tie for fourth at the 2020 US Women's Open was the only time since her win that she finished in the top 30 at a major.

Her round included seven birdies and one bogey, but after taking the lead, she closed with five consecutive pars.

Kupcho started her day with 16 straight pars before she birdied two of her final three holes.

Park's round was highlighted by a stretch of four birdies in a five-hole run surrounding the turn.

Tavatanakit got through an up-and-down round that included six birdies and three bogeys. She closed with back-to-back birdies.
