Motorsport: Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen extends 2022 Supercars lead with sixth win at Melbourne

Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen has stretched his lead in the 2022 Supercars championship with is fifth and sixth wins of the campaign at Melbourne's Albert Park.

After racing to third on Friday night, the defending champion notched up his first victory at the Formula One round since 2016, before repeating the dose on Saturday night.

"Man, my car is a jet," said van Gisbergen. "I can't thank everyone at Red Bull Ampol Racing enough, so enjoyable this weekend.

"I was just pushing and pushing... some good racing, this track's good for racing and passing."

The result marks van Gisbergen's 60th career victory and stretches his championship lead to 186 points over Anton de Pasquale.

Starting third on the grid, the Kiwi slipped back to fourth initially, with polesitter de Pasquale defending his lead until lap four, when Will Davison took over.

Van Gisbergen eventually nudged past Davison on lap 12 and won going away, with a final margin of 5.6s. With one race to come, he has both hands on the Larry Perkins Trophy, awarded to the top driver across the four races at Melbourne this weekend, with one more scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
