Cricket: Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson run out for diamond duck in Indian Premier League loss

Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson has had to trudge off for one of cricket's biggest embarrassments, out for a diamond duck in Sunrisers Hyderabad's Indian Premier League loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Chasing 193 for victory and opening the batting, Williamson was called through for a non-existent single by his partner, India's Abishek Sharma, but Shahbaz Ahmed threw down the stumps at the striker's end.

Williamson was short of his ground and was dismissed without even facing a ball.

To make matters worse, after running his captain out, Sharma couldn't make the most of his innings, bowled for a third-ball duck by Australian Glenn Maxwell.

Earlier, Williamson had played a captaincy masterstroke, opening the bowling with spinner Jagadeesha Suchith and immediately to dismissing ex-India captain Virat Kohli for a royal duck off the first ball of the innings.

But former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis stood tall to steer Bangalore to a total of 192/3 from their 20 overs, carrying his bat for 73 not out.

After Williamson's early exit, Sunrisers failed to mount a challenge to the Royal Challengers total. Only Raul Tripathi (58) offered any score of note, as overseas batters Aiden Markam (21) and Nicholas Pooran (21) couldn't make up for the loss of their captain.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga shone with the ball for Bangalore, taking 5/18 from his four overs in a man-of-the-match display to help bowl Sunrisers out for 125, sealing a 67-run victory for his side.

Bangalore's victory takes them to fourth on the IPL ladder, behind Trent Boult's Rajasthan Royals on net run rate and in finals contention.

Williamson's Sunrisers are sixth, part of a three-way logjam with Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, four points off a top-four place.
