Former Wellington Phoenix star Ulises Davila's wife, Lily Pacheco, has died suddenly overnight.

Davila's current A-League club Macarthur FC announced the tragic news. The couple had a two-year-old son, Uli Jnr, born during his stint with the Phoenix.

The cause of death hasn't been made public.

"The Wellington Phoenix are saddened to hear the news that Ulises Dávila’s wife Lily has passed away," the Phoenix tweeted. "Uli & his whānau will always be a part of ours.

"We would like to send our deepest condolences to Uli & his family during this tough time. Kia kaha."

The former Mexican age-group international joined the Phoenix in 2019, quickly becoming the club's premier players.

He scored 19 goals and dished 12 assists during his two-year tenure, and captained the team for their 2020/21 campaign, sharing the Johnny Warren Medal as the A-League's best player.

Davila left the Phoenix last year to take up a three-year deal with Sydney-based Macarthur.

Last week, he was named Macarthur's Player of the Year at their annual awards dinner.
