Super Rugby Pacific: Hurricanes dominate Fijian Drua for confidence-boosting victory at Wellington

Fullback Josh Moorby had a hat-trick of tries for the Hurricanes, as they totally dominated Super Rugby Pacific newcomers Fijian Drua 67-5 at Wellington.

Winger Wes Goosen and centre Billy Proctor added a brace each, as the home side rebounded from their loss to ACT Brumbies last week to run in 11 tries, six of them converted by young first-five Aidan Morgan.

With several frontline players sitting this contest out - including All Blacks Ardie Savea and Jordie Barrett - Hurricanes coach Jason Holland used the occasion to expose some of his rookies to this level of play.

Late in the game, Riley Higgins, 19, became the youngest-ever Hurricanes debutant and moments later, he also became the youngest-ever yellow-carded.

In his first season of Super Rugby, Moorby opened his account in the seventh minute and had another before halftime, adding his third late in the game, after shifting to the wing.

Drua have shown some ability against NZ sides, frustrating the Blues two weeks ago and conceding a late to defeat to the Highlanders at Suva last week, but they showed nothing against the Hurricanes, except an inability to clear their own territory.

Fullback Kitione Taliga twice put kickoffs into touch on the full to concede attacking opportunities to their rivals.

Gifted a feast of possession and territory, the Hurricanes were hardly tested, splitting the defence time and time again. Drua finally visited the opposition 22 late in the game, when replacement Onisi Ratave scored their only try from a scrum move.

The Hurricanes consolidated their hold on seventh spot on the competition table and can jump a spot, if they topple NSW Waratahs at Sydney next Saturday.

Hurricanes 67 (Moorby 3, Goosen 2, Rayasi, Proctor 2, Sangster, Walker-Leawere & Aumua tries, Morgan 6 conversions) Drua 5 (Ratave try)
