Cricket: Blackcaps batter Daryl Mitchell slams six into fan's beer in second test against England

Blackcaps all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has made a splash on the opening day of the second test against England, smashing a six straight into a startled female fan's pint of beer.

"It's plopped in a beer," exclaimed one commentator, after the all-rounder followed up a four with a six straight into the stands off a Jack Leach delivery in the 56th over at Trent Bridge.

Slow motion television repeats clearly showed the splashdown.

Nearby, England seamer Matthew Potts signalled from the boundary to his teammates what had happened, mimicking a glass and raising an imaginary pint.

"Come on Jack, keep him quiet," quipped former England spin bowler Phil Tufnell on the BBC commentary. "This is costing people a fortune in beer in the stands."

The Blackcaps quickly came to the party with a replacement pint.

Mitchell met Susan - the unsuspecting victim - after the day's play, offering a lighthearted apology and joking she should try to catch it with her hands next time.

"I didn't have time to think," she said. "It just went straight in the pot."

She also revealed the incident had resulted in a few free rounds.

Mitchell finished the opening day unbeaten on 81 to help put the Blackcaps in control of the second test at 318/4.
