Cricket: Michael Rippon switches international loyalty for first Blackcaps call-up

Netherlands and Otago all-rounder Michael Rippon has switched international allegiance, and has received his maiden Blackcaps call-up for the white-ball leg of their European tour.

Rippon, 30, was born in South Africa, but moved to New Zealand in 2013 to play for Otago. The same year, he debuted for the Netherlands and has represented the associate nation in nine one-day internationals and 18 Twenty20 internationals.

The left-arm wrist spinner has taken 13 ODI wickets at an average of 23 and 15 T20 wickets at 20.66 to go with his handy lower-order batting, including a career-best 67 against the Blackcaps earlier this year.

ICC regulations allow Rippon to change allegiance from an associate to a full member country with no stand-down period, but would need to sit out for three years to play for the Netherlands again.

Rippon will join the Blackcaps for three T20s against Ireland, two T20s and one ODI against Scotland and two T20s against his former Netherlands side.

The quartet of captain Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Devon Conway have been rested for the white-ball leg, and will return to New Zealand after the current test series against England.

Tom Latham will captain the ODI side in place of Williamson, but will return to New Zealand after the 50-over matches, along with Henry Nicholls, Matt Henry, Will Young and Jacob Duffy, all currently in England for the tests. Santner will assume the leadership after Latham's departure.

Meanwhile, Adam Milne returns to the ODI side for the first time since 2017, while the uncapped Dane Cleaver, Ben Sears, Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips are in line for their debuts.

Coach Gary Stead will miss the matches against Ireland for a short rest, as bowling coach Shane Jurgensen will coach the side in Stead's absence. Stead will return for the matches against Scotland and the Netherlands.

The Blackcaps face Ireland at Belfast, Scotland at Edinburgh and the Netherlands at Amsterdam.
