Football World Cup: All Whites' Oli Sail undeterred by goalkeeping gaffe before Costa Rica intercontinental playoff

All Whites shot-stopper Oli Sail won't let his goalkeeping gaffe against Peru change the way he approaches the game before their World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica on Wednesday.

New Zealand face their Central American opponents in the intercontinental playoff for a spot at the Qatar tournament in November.

Sail had earned the starting spot between the sticks for the friendly, and was putting in a good performance before the untimely mistake.

With just over 20 minutes to play, Sail got a heavy first touch on a firm back pass from defender Tim Payne, allowing the ball to fall for Peru's Gianluca Lapadula to control and make them pay.

Sail accepts responsibility for the mishap, but believes it was the right idea.

"I was fine with the decision making, I was fine with the pass back and my decision to take a touch to try and shift it, but it was just execution of a poor touch," he said.

"It's frustrating because I think for the 93 of the 94 minutes, with the exception of that moment, I felt very comfortable and thought I was performing quite well.

"Just let myself and the boys down with a poor touch that ultimately cost us the game which was frustrating but not going to let it hit my confidence."

With their do-or-die clash just a couple days away, it remains to be seen if Sail or Stefan Marinovic will be selected as the first-choice goalkeeper by coach Danny Hay.

Sail is confident should he be picked, there won't be a repeat of his error, but won't shy away from playing with the ball at his feet.

"It's not something I've done before and I don't plan on doing it again. It was one of the moments that I hope I've gotten out of my system, away from the big game."

"I'm still going to go about things the same, still going to play out from the back and help us to start attacks like Danny wants us to do.

"I'm not going to let it phase me or the way I approach this game."
