Rugby League: Debutants shine as Kiwi Ferns run rampant in thumping of Tonga women

The Kiwi Ferns have thumped Mate Ma'a Tonga in their international women's rugby league clash at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland on Saturday.

New Zealand ran out comprehensive 50-12 winners as the team's debutants showed few issues adjusting to the test level.

Amy Turner, Roxy Murdoch and Page McGregor all dotted down in their first outing in the black and white jersey.

The Kiwi Ferns scored three tries in the opening 10 minutes before Tonga were down a player after Shirley Mailangi was shown a yellow card.

New Zealand showed little let up as they raced to a comfortable 30-0 halftime lead in front of a growing sea of red fans at Mt Smart Stadium.

The second-half provided little relief for the visitors as the Kiwi Ferns continued where they had left off with a dominant second stanza.

Laishon Albert-Jones put a rough night with the boot behind her to grab a try of her own after being denied just seconds before.

China Polata would ensure Tonga didn't finish the match scoreless, grabbing a try before Haylee Hifo nailed the conversion from out wide much to the delight of the Tongan supporters.

Nita Maynard would cross just 10 minutes later, which allowed Jones to slot the conversion and bring up the half-century for the Kiwi Ferns.

But it was Tonga who would have the final say of the game after Hifo broke through the New Zealand defence to score the try, before nailing the extra two points on the hooter.

Kiwi Ferns 50 (Page McGregor, Bartlett 2x, Vaha'akolo 2x, Raecene McGregor, Turner, Murdoch, Wira-Kohu, Jones, Maynard tries; Jones conversions 3x)

Tonga 12 (Polata, Hifo tries, Hifo conversion 2x)
