Super Rugby Pacific: Mind games kick off before heavyweight battle between Blues and Crusaders

The Crusaders have touched down in Auckland on Thursday for their Super Rugby Pacific final against the Blues, but to fly out again with a sixth title in six years, they know they'll have to be at their very best at a soldout Eden Park.

"It almost has a Johannesburg feel to it, where everyone's cheering against you, so you hopefully keep that crowd quiet," said Crusaders captain Scott Barrett.

The buzz around this weekend's showdown is obvious.

Last year's abbreviated trans-Tasman final aside, this is the first fully fledged Super Rugby final at Eden Park in more than two decades and the Blues can feel the buzz.

"The fact it's the Crusaders, there's a lot of hype around town everywhere you go," said Blues coach Leon MacDonald. "Every time you walk down the street, someone's wishing you well."

There's more edge than usual for Saturday's final - or maybe it's simply mind games.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson sees similarities to his team's game, when he analyses the Blues.

"With our team, everything is built off the back of great [defence], and they've defended and scrambled, and taken key moments," he said. "So there's familiarities with it, yeah."

But Blues counterpart MacDonald isn't so sure, insisting his side has their own unique profile.

"Our game is our game and it's different to theirs," he said, in response to Robertson's comments. "Theirs is dangerous and I think ours is too, but for different reasons."

Regardless of how similar their games may or may not be, there's no doubt Super Rugby's two heavyweights have landed right where they want to be.

They've already met twice before in Super Rugby finals, winning one each, and the Crusaders are leaning on past experience to help them make it two.

"I was talking to Richie McCaw yesterday and he just gives you that," said Robertson. "He confirms what you're thinking and what's required."

The Crusaders and Blues will write the latest chapter in their storied rivalry on Saturday, and you can bet it will - once again - live up to the hype.
