All Blacks v Ireland: Leadership group taking responsibility, embracing pressure of test series decider

As the All Blacks face a series-deciding clash with Ireland on Saturday, the spotlight is shining even brighter than usual on the side's top brass.

In a week where the pressure is heightened, the All Blacks' leadership group is putting the responsibility on themselves to lead the side out of their current hole and into what they hope will be a series victory.

The All Blacks are portraying a picture of calm ahead of the series decider. But there's pressure, and they know it.

They're not hiding from it, in fact coach Ian Foster is encouraging his side to embrace it, as his leadership group try and steer them through a difficult fallout from their Dunedin loss.

"It's kind of no bigger [than] any other week - but it's different," Foster said.

"They [the players] hurt, they've got high standards, and so as a collective, we work hard on that."

It's a situation where Sam Whitelock's 133 tests worth of experience is vital.

He's been here before. He's played in some of the biggest test matches in All Blacks history.

So he knows how the picture should look ahead of a series decider.

"Everyone's had a really good week," Whitelock said. "No one's overplayed their hands.

"Everyone's been leading in their own areas - which we're all expected to do."

While the All Blacks' performance was substandard last week, the focus this week has been about more than just what they put out on the field.

"It was a wake-up call for us," centre Rieko Ioane told Newshub of the Dunedin loss.

"The top two inches are the winning and losing of games. It's the 1 percent that you don't see that gets teams over the line."

"This is where you wanna be in terms of the excitement," added Foster. "We don't want to lose a test, but we have."

And the All Blacks' leadership group is out to ensure they don't again, on Saturday.
