Commonwealth Games: Birmingham call-up gives White Ferns speedster Lea Tahuhu career boost

Five weeks after being left off the NZ Cricket contract list, Lea Tahuhu is back in the White Ferns environment.

The veteran fast-bowler was a notable and controversial omission in May, but has been recalled into the Commonwealth Games squad, after Lauren Down withdrew to focus on her wellbeing.

Even Tahuhu's surprised to be heading to Birmingham. Even in her wildest dreams, she didn't expect to already be back in black.

"I was disappointed to have missed out in the first place and thought that dream of going to the Commonwealth Games was gone," she said.

But it's not, after being called in as a replacement.

"It was always my ambition to fight my way back in and to have been given that now is really exciting."

While she's fit and raring to go, a minor passport issue briefly threatened to curtail her plans, but has since been resolved.

"I have got my passport," she laughed. "I can confirm I've got my passport and will be on the plane."

Among those delighted to see her return is the man who delivered the good news last week - new Ferns coach Ben Sawyer.

"It was weird sort of saying welcome back, but she's been great around the group, even the couple of hours we've had here, so she's going to play a big part for us," he said. "I'm looking forward to seeing what she can do."

What's not on the to-do list is proving a point.

"I'm comfortable coming in," said Tahuhu. "I'll play a similar role, I'm sure, so not too much changes for me from that point of view."

After a rollercoaster few weeks, Tahuhu's just happy to be wearing the fern on her chest again.
