Cricket: Glenn Phillips delivers Blackcaps victory for Twenty20 series clean sweep over Ireland

The Blackcaps have sealed a clean sweep of the Twenty20 International series against Ireland, taking victory in the third and final match by six wickets in Belfast.

Chasing 175 runs for victory, an unbeaten 56 runs to Glenn Phillips laid the platform for the Blackcaps' victory, before a brisk cameo of 23 not out from six balls to Jimmy Neesham sealed the win with an over to spare.

In partnership with Daryl Mitchell (48), Phillips helped rescue the Blackcaps from what could have been a perilous position, before turning the tide to seal New Zealand's win.

Normally known as one of the more powerful hitters in the Blackcaps' batting order, 25-year-old Phillips' innings on Saturday (NZ time) was far more circumspect - hitting just one boundary and one six in his knock with 46 runs scored between the wickets.

Phillips' efforts saw him take the man of the series award, finishing as its leading run scorer with 148 - including an unbeaten 69 to give the Blackcaps victory in game one, as well as man of the match for game three.

As the hosts won the toss and opted to bat first, opener Paul Stirling led the way with 40 runs from 29 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes before he was caught behind by Dane Cleaver off the bowling of Ish Sodhi (2/27).

After Stirling's exit, cameos of 28 from 19 balls to Lorcan Tucker and 23 off 20 to Harry Tector set Ireland up for a big finish, provided by all-rounder Mark Adair.

Adair struck an impressive 37 not out from only 15 balls - hitting four sixes - to lift the hosts to 174/6 from their 20 overs.

In response, the Blackcaps lost opener Finn Allen (14 off seven) and Dane Cleaver (five from six) inside the powerplay, before Martin Guptill departed in the eighth over for 25 from 19.

At 65/3, Mitchell joined Phillips at the crease, still needing 110 runs from 73 balls for victory.

But the pair of right handers took their time before launching an assault that ultimately swung the match in the Blackcaps' favour.

Mitchell took on the role of the aggressor, hitting five boundaries and one six in his innings of 48, as he and Phillips raised a 50-run stand in 38 balls and celebrated by combining to take 15 runs from one over bowled by Curtis Campher.

But with a half-century in sight, Mitchell fell courtesy of a fantastic caught and bowled to Josh Little at 147/4, ending the partnership with Phillips for 82 runs in 53 balls.

Mitchell's exit saw Jimmy Neesham arrive at the crease, and sent the final ball of the 18th over over the ropes for six to bring the equation to 12 needed from 12.

And as Little continued into the 19th over, Neesham was fortunate to collect two boundaries with mistimed pull shots behind the wicket, before smashing six more over deep midwicket for the winning runs.

The Blackcaps will now travel to Edinburgh for the next leg of their European tour, where they'll face hosts Scotland in two T20 Internationals and a One Day International, before finishing with two T20 Internationals against the Netherlands.
