Motorsport: Kiwi Scott McLaughlin clinches second IndyCar win of season at Mid-Ohio

Kiwi driver Scott McLaughlin has claimed his second ever Indycar race victory, taking out the Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio.

Starting second on the grid, McLaughlin benefitted from a yellow flag to take the lead from Pato O'Ward and then held on for the win.

McLaughlin now moves up to seventh in the Indycar drivers standings, after the much-needed victory.

Parents Wayne and Diane McLaughlin nervously watched from the pitlane, after they were finally able to leave New Zealand in May.

They had not seen each other for 31 months, because of COVID-19 restrictions, but made sure to watch as many races as they could on their tour of the US. They only needed four to see their son claim a special victory.

When he won his first race in February on the St Petersburg street course in Florida, he celebrated with his parents, via FaceTime.

"I really wanted to get a win here with Mom and Dad," said McLaughlin, who won three consecutive V8 Supercars championships in Australia.

Fellow Kiwi Scott Dixon finished fifth.
