All Blacks prop Ofa Tu'ungafasi will miss the two-test visit to South Africa with a neck injury suffered during the loss to Ireland at Wellington.
The Blues front-rower lasted only a few minutes off the bench, before departing again, summoning starter Nepo Laulala back into action for most of the second half.
Tu'ungafasi, 30, has been replaced by Crusaders youngster Fletcher Newell, one of the breakout performers in his side's victorious Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
"I missed the call from the All Blacks manager and he texted me to give him a call," said Newell, 22. "I've never rung anyone back as quick as that before.
"It was pretty surreal when he gave me the news - it's an awesome moment and I really can't put any words together.
"Me and my dad are really close, so I rang him and he was super proud. I pretty much rang my whole family after that and everyone was really, really happy.
"We shared some really good moments."
Newell probably owes his call-up to the elevation of Crusaders forwards coach Jason Ryan to the All Blacks assistant role, but certainly earned his spot.
During the Super Rugby final, he came off the bench to help dismantle a Blues scrum that included international front-rowers Tu'ungafasi and Karl Tu'unukuafe."
Tu'ungafasi joins Laulala, lock Brodie Retallick and midfielder Jack Goodhue, who will all miss the South African visit, but he hopes to return for the All Blacks' Rugby Championship fixture against Argentina on August 27.
